Atlantic (Endless Row) originates on a journey to Ghana in 2008. Today, the former headquarters and embarkation point for the Danish slave trade, Fort Christiansborg (1661), still stands here, as well as the Danish slave fort Prinzenstein (1784), from which countless enslaved individuals were deported. Using a characteristic method that also appears in several of my earlier works, I have carefully retouched a number of people out of the photographs, leaving only their reflections visible along the shoreline. Through this simple gesture, a complex statement is made about Denmark’s neglected colonial past, as well as the process of stripping a human being of everything during enslavement.
