Hoist and the Unseen: Journeys Through Tempests in Times of Hunger” is a new site-specific installation produced for Prospect 6 at the Ford Motor Plant in New Orleans located down by the Mississippi River. Once a symbol of American industrial power and modernity, this abandoned factory now embodies themes of time and transformation. Inspired by Copenhagen’s West Indian Warehouse, built in the 18th century, which stored goods produced by enslaved labor in the Danish West Indies, the installation features a replica of the original hoist wheel, with braided ropes evoking fundamental themes of connectivity and resilience within the African diaspora in the face of exploitation. Juxtaposing these two spaces—an industrial relic in the U.S. and a colonial warehouse in Denmark—reveals the intertwined histories of colonialism and industry, highlighting a shared story of struggle and survival across the Atlantic.
